The Institute of Diversity Medicine at Ruhr University Bochum is the first of its kind in Germany. It focuses on researching individual differences – such as background, sex, social environment and biological factors – and their impact on medical care.

The Institute of Pathology at BG University Hospital Bergmannsheil Bochum is an important partner in medical education and diagnostics. It plays a key role in investigating the causes of disease and supports clinical research and patient care.
Institute for Prevention and Occupational Medicine (IPA) of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV)
The Institute for Prevention and Occupational Medicine (IPA) of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) is a pioneer in occupational health research. It combines scientific research with practical measures to protect health in the workplace and in educational institutions.

The Department of Affective Neuroscience at Ruhr University Bochum investigates the neural foundations of emotions, mood and related processes. It combines basic research with psychological and translational approaches to understand how emotions affect the brain and health.
The Department of General Practice at Ruhr University Bochum focuses on primary care as a central component of the healthcare system. It combines practice-oriented teaching, patient-centred research and the development of innovative care concepts for healthcare provision in urban and rural areas.
We develop innovative cancer therapies that minimise patient suffering and improve treatment outcomes. We rethink chemotherapeutic strategies, uncover new mechanisms of action and develop site-specific therapeutics.
The department explores how digital technologies are transforming medicine and nursing. Its focus is on new decision-making processes, changing responsibilities, and the reshaping of medical and health-related knowledge through digital systems.
The Department of Human Genetics at Ruhr University Bochum focuses on the genetic foundations of health and disease. Its work centres on the research, diagnosis and counselling of hereditary diseases, as well as the analysis of the genetic causes of complex diseases.
The Department of Medical Bioinformatics focuses on the comprehensive analysis of various types of omics data, including sequencing data from areas such as transcriptomics, genomics and proteomics. In addition to developing powerful bioinformatics workflows and pipelines for processing large datasets, the research group focuses on integrating different types of omics data.
Medical Informatics, Biostatistics and Epidemiology

The Department of Medical Informatics, Biostatistics and Epidemiology combines methodological expertise with medical research and teaching. It provides a foundation in medical data analysis, evidence-based research and computer-based information processing.
The Department of Molecular Gastrointestinal Oncology at Ruhr University Bochum focuses on investigating the molecular mechanisms of tumours in the digestive tract and translating these findings into diagnostics and therapies.
The Department of Molecular Immunology at Ruhr University Bochum investigates the molecular foundations of the immune system and their role in health and disease. It provides students with essential knowledge of immunology and modern methods in biomedical research.
The Department of Neurostimulation investigates clinically relevant questions in neuropsychiatry using computational methods, with the aim of better understanding neurostimulation techniques and translating them into clinical practice.
Translational and Computational Infectious Disease Research

The Department of Translational and Computational Infectious Disease Research investigates the course and evolution of RNA viruses such as hepatitis E. It combines virology, bioinformatics and clinical data to develop new analytical tools and approaches for diagnosis and treatment.
The Medical Proteome Centre is a leading institute for proteomics and protein analysis. Using state-of-the-art technologies, it investigates questions in clinical medicine and basic research, creating new perspectives for precision medicine.
Centre for Medical Psychology and Translational Neuroscience
Our interdisciplinary research at the interface of psychology and medicine investigates biopsychosocial mechanisms and risk factors in common disorders such as chronic pain, anxiety disorders and depression. The aim is to better understand disease processes and develop innovative treatment approaches.
