Elective Subjects in Medical Studies

Elective subjects are an integral part of the human medicine programme at Ruhr University Bochum. They enable you to explore your individual interests in greater depth and to focus on additional specialist areas.

In accordance with the Medical Licence Regulations (ÄApO), students complete the following during their medical studies:

a pre-clinical elective subject in the pre-clinical stage of their studies and

a clinical elective subject in the first clinical stage of their studies.

Both elective subjects must be completed with a graded performance record.

If you have already completed coursework and would like to have it recognised as an elective, please contact the Examination Office of the Faculty of Medicine in good time.

Pre-clinical Elective

In the pre-clinical stage of your studies, you will choose an elective subject from the range of subjects offered by Ruhr University Bochum. The subject you choose must be clearly related to medical studies.

An overview of all approved pre-clinical electives can be found in the catalogue of pre-clinical electives, which also contains brief explanations of the individual courses. Alternatively, an elective can be chosen from the range offered by the RUB Faculty of Medicine. The relevant contact persons are listed in the catalogue of clinical electives.

After completing the pre-clinical elective, the responsible lecturer will send the results directly to the examination office. Once the transcript of records has been fully processed and signed, students can collect it there.

Clinical Elective

In the first clinical study section, you will complete a clinical elective from the range of courses offered by the Faculty of Medicine at Ruhr University Bochum. This elective is a prerequisite for admission to the second section of the medical examination and is also completed with a graded performance record.

All clinical electives are listed in the catalogue of clinical electives. There you will also find the respective subject representatives and the relevant contact persons in the departments involved.

After successful completion, the result is reported to the examination office by the responsible teacher. As with all internal university performance records for the first clinical stage of study, the performance record remains in the examination office until PJ maturity is determined.
