DocYouMent-Program for women
The DocYouMent mentoring program promotes the careers of young female scientists in medicine. The three-stage program includes modules for female students, doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers/doctors in training and postdoctoral lecturers.
What is mentoring?
Mentoring describes the exchange of knowledge and experience: from 1-to-1 mentoring to peer mentoring and group mentoring, there are various forms of mentoring.
What are the requirements for participation?
All women at the RUB Faculty of Medicine are eligible to participate - including female scientists at the RUB UK. Both lateral entry into the program during the current training phase and chronological participation from the beginning of the medical career are possible.
Why are only women allowed to apply?
With the exception of DocYouMent-Care, all modules are reserved for women. This is because, while the proportion of women is significantly higher at the beginning of their studies up to doctoral level, it is significantly lower in the subsequent career stages in medicine. In particular, the frequent quadruple burden of research, clinical work, teaching and private life is often a greater challenge for women than for men - and therefore requires targeted support.

All Modules of the DocYouMent-Program
The DocYouMent program aims to sensitize women to individual career planning and to question this at various points along the career path and drive it forward in planning. Participation in the mentoring program is free of charge for all modules.

DocYouMent
DocYouMent was developed especially for female doctoral students. The mentees are given a space to regularly exchange ideas with other mentees, discuss their future career path and support each other. The supplementary range of workshops is intended to expand their knowledge of processes, structures and rules of the game in the medical science sector.
Our DocYouMent module runs for 1 year and 3 months and usually starts in March/April of each year.
Learn more about the contents of DocYouMent
DocYouMent provides for peer mentoring in which the mentees join together in groups (max. 8 people). The group organizes itself and meets at regular intervals - approx. every 4-6 weeks, in person or online by arrangement - to exchange ideas.
As a basis for the group meetings, the mentoring coordinator provides a specially created “DocYouMent”, which specifically highlights future career planning and can provide a discussion guide for the peer group meetings in the form of a “career landscape” to be developed. In addition, participants are introduced to the method of peer (specialist) counseling. This can be used as part of the regular exchange if required. Mentees also have the opportunity to invite experts on specific topics to their meetings at any time. The mentoring coordinator is responsible for finding and requesting experts.
In addition to peer mentoring, mentees can take part in a total of 4 workshops on career planning. The workshops offered are full-day face-to-face events and take place during the week. To ensure that the mentees can take part in the workshops, the respective dates are announced well in advance.
Finally, networking evenings are designed and offered by the mentoring coordinator. At such an event, invited experts provide input that serves as a basis for the subsequent discussion. The networking evenings take place both in person and digitally, usually last a maximum of 2 hours and start at 6 p.m. at the earliest.
Learn more about applying for DocYouMent
The application for DocYouMent is submitted in writing. It includes an application form to be completed, a short letter of motivation for participation in the mentoring program and a current (scientific) CV. The application is possible until 16.02.2025.
Shortly after the application deadline, we will invite all suitable candidates to an interview.
Our DocYouMent module is specially designed for female doctoral candidates at the RUB Faculty of Medicine. We are also happy to accept people into the mentoring program who are about to register for their doctorate. If you are not sure whether you fit into the mentoring module we offer, you can contact the mentoring coordination team at any time by e-mail or telephone.

POST-DocYouMent
POST-DocYouMent is specifically designed for postdoctoral researchers and female physicians in specialist training. The mentees are given the opportunity to engage in regular exchanges with a mentor and to reflect concretely on their future career paths. Through complementary workshops and individual coaching sessions, they expand their practical knowledge of processes, structures, and rules within the academic medical field, while sharpening their individual profiles. In addition, the program focuses on developing competencies for future leadership roles as well as interdisciplinary key skills.
POST-DocYouMent has a duration of two years and is expected to start in November/December 2025.

The individual workshops are specifically combined with individual coaching sessions for the mentees, which take place directly after the workshops and take up and address the content of the workshops once again on an individual level.
Finally, networking evenings are designed and offered by the mentoring coordination team. At such an event, invited experts provide thematic input that serves as a basis for the subsequent discussion. The networking evenings take place both in person and digitally, usually last a maximum of 2 hours and start at 6 pm at the earliest.

DocYouMent–HABIL
DocYouMent_HABIL is specifically aimed at female postdoctoral researchers pursuing habilitation and women with the concrete and foreseeable career goal of becoming a professor. In medicine, too, the phenomenon of the ‘leaky pipeline’ can still be observed: while the proportion of women is comparatively high at the beginning of medical studies, it decreases steadily with each qualification stage, resulting in a significantly higher proportion of men at the professorial level.
This mentoring program is designed to support participants in taking the crucial step toward a professorship by offering targeted appointment training and the opportunity to simulate an appointment procedure.
Our DocYouMent_HABIL module has a duration of 1 year and 3 months and will start again in March 2026
Learn more about the contents of DocYouMent-HABIL
For the duration of DocYouMent_HABIL, a mentor group is formed that represents a broad field of experienced scientists (from medicine) and ideally also the profiles of the individual mentoring participants. During the course of the mentoring program, mentees have the opportunity to attend targeted one-to-one meetings with people from the mentoring group as needed in order to exchange ideas with the respective mentors on the topic of career planning. The frequency and form of the exchange is individually tailored to the needs of each participant.
In addition, the mentees have the opportunity to take advantage of a Coaching+ offer during the mentoring program. In three two-day workshops, all participants receive theoretical input from a trainer in the group, followed by intensive individual coaching. In terms of content, the topics of self-presentation and leadership are to be dealt with in general on the one hand and targeted preparation for upcoming appointment procedures is to take place on the other. In addition, the mentees will simulate going through an appointment procedure as part of the DocYouMent_HABIL module. This involves the participants initially taking on the challenge of writing a fictitious, individually tailored job advertisement, to which they then write an application. The participants then have the opportunity to simulate a (fictitious) job application presentation and the subsequent interview.
In addition, the group for the appointment procedure simulation is specifically supplemented by representatives of the student body and the MTV department as well as equal opportunities. The fictitious appointment committee formed in this way will provide the respective mentees with constructive feedback during and, above all, at the end of the appointment process. Finally, the Mentoring Coordination will design and offer networking evenings, particularly for the DocYouMent modules for doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers/doctors in training, which participants in the DocYouMent_HABIL module are also welcome to attend, provided there is a thematic fit.
As part of such an event, there is usually input from invited experts, which then serves as a basis for discussion and debate. The networking evenings take place both in person and digitally, usually last a maximum of 2 hours and start at 6 pm at the earliest.

DocYouMent_CAREPAKET
Balancing family life with work and studies is a fundamental building block for a satisfying work-life balance. While trying to fully meet the demands and needs of family life, ideally professional engagement should not suffer—and vice versa.
For this reason, we aim to offer a program for members of the Medical Faculty and University Hospitals at RUB that focuses on this challenge: our DocYouMent_CAREPAKET.
The package consists of a total of four components: Coaching | Exchange | Advice | Support.
Coaching
As part of up to three individually tailored coaching sessions, you will have the opportunity to reflect on your personal situation in a safe and supportive environment. Together with an experienced coach, you will develop strategies to manage family responsibilities while actively shaping your professional or academic development.
The goal of coaching is to help you recognize your own resources and expand your range of options. It supports you in gaining clarity about your priorities, adopting new perspectives, and developing individual solutions. This way, practical approaches are created that can sustainably improve the balance between family and career.
Individual coaching provides a protected space where you and your personal situation are the focus. Each session usually lasts one hour and primarily takes place digitally.
We work with external coaches and will select, together with you, the coach best suited to your needs. All session content is, of course, strictly confidential.
The coaching program is open to all individuals, regardless of gender, who currently have - or will soon have - family responsibilities. We have intentionally made the program accessible to everyone, as balancing work or study with family responsibilities should be considered by all. This applies whether you are on campus or in the hospitals, whether you are a student or an employee, a first-semester student, a doctoral candidate, a nurse, a lab worker, a physician in training, a senior physician, or a professor. Everyone should have the opportunity to apply for the coaching program.
Participation in the individual coaching sessions is free of charge - the costs are covered by the program. As the budget is limited, an application is required.
Applications are accepted twice a year - midway through the winter semester and the summer semester.
The application deadlines can be found here.
The application documet is available here.
Exchange
The digital “PARENTS’ EVENING” offers the opportunity to focus specifically on the topic of balancing family life with work or studies, to engage in an exchange of experiences, and ideally to develop strategies and solutions to better manage your individual work-life challenges. In the long term, we hope to create a (parent) network that continues to grow.
The DocYouMent_CARE program “PARENTS’ EVENING” is open to all individuals, regardless of gender, who currently have—or will soon have—family responsibilities. Unlike our other mentoring programs, which are exclusively designed for women, we have intentionally made this offer accessible to everyone, as the reconciliation of work or studies with family life should, in our view, be considered by all.
Whether on campus or in the hospitals, whether students or staff, whether first-semester students, doctoral candidates, nurses, lab workers, physicians in training, senior physicians, or professors – we invite everyone to participate in our format. Feel free to include your partner as well!
Each year, eight digital PARENTS’ EVENINGS are planned, each focusing on different topics. A typical evening combines an input from our speakers with active participation from attendees, enabling an exchange of experiences among all participants. After the scheduled 1.5 hours, the space remains open for informal discussion and networking—the last person to leave “closes the digital door.”
The PARENTS’ EVENINGS are led by Nils Seiler, father and lecturer on parenting topics from Berlin.
You can register for individual evenings at any time via email at mentoring-medizinrub "«@&.de
Shortly before the event, you will receive the Zoom link. Please include your name and your status group (e.g., student, professor) in your email.
An overview of the upcoming PARENTS’ EVENINGS can be found here.
Advice
As part of the DocYouMent_CAREPAKET, we aim to connect you with experienced mentors who have successfully navigated the challenges of balancing family life and career. In an open conversation, they share their experiences, strategies, and personal tips, supporting you in developing your own solutions.
Mentoring means benefiting from the experiences of others, gaining orientation, and being encouraged to actively shape your own path. In this open exchange, you can ask questions, discuss uncertainties, and explore new perspectives—guided by people who have successfully managed similar situations.
The mentoring exchange is open to all individuals, regardless of gender, who currently have—or will soon have—family responsibilities. Unlike our other mentoring programs, which are exclusively designed for women, we have intentionally made this offer accessible to everyone, as the reconciliation of work or studies with family life should, in our view, be considered by all. Whether on campus or in the hospitals, whether students or staff, whether first-semester students, doctoral candidates, nurses, lab workers, physicians in training, senior physicians, or professors – we invite everyone to take part in this offer. We will make every effort to match you with mentors who are suitable for your situation.
Initially, we plan to introduce you to your mentor. Once the first contact is established, you can meet with your mentor—either in person or digitally—in a safe and confidential space for discussion. A single meeting is initially planned, but additional meetings can be arranged if mutually desired.
If you are interested in participating in a mentoring exchange, please contact us at any time! We are currently recruiting a variety of individuals as mentors for this program and will match them with mentees like you.
Please feel free to email us at mentoring-medizinrub "«@&.de or call us at +49 234 32 26119 so that we can coordinate the next steps together.
Support
Intensive family phases, such as the period around parental leave and maternity protection, can be particularly challenging for parents in terms of balancing work and family life, and can often significantly slow down career development. To help offset this imbalance, we provide funding for a student research assistant who can temporarily relieve you as a researcher.
This offer is aimed at all individuals who are currently pursuing a doctoral degree or have already completed one and are conducting research at the Medical Faculty of RUB, including the University Hospitals (this includes physicians working in the clinics). If your family situation (childcare, maternity protection/employment restrictions, parental leave, or caring for relatives) limits your ability to carry out scientific work, and you could benefit from support from a student research assistant, you are eligible for this program.
As part of your application, please outline your current situation and your specific support needs, including the duration and weekly workload for which assistance would be helpful. The final arrangement of the support will be flexibly adapted to your individual circumstances. If the Equality Team approves the funding, the financing will be handled through the finance office on campus. For the University Hospitals, funding is arranged via a subsequent fund request.
The support from a student research assistant is fully funded by the program. Since the budget is limited, an application is required.
Application periods occur twice a year—once in the middle of the winter semester and once in the middle of the summer semester.
You can find the application deadlines here and the application form here.

Mentoring-Program: MentÄ@UK RUB
The proportion of female assistant doctors, especially those who have completed a doctorate, has risen in recent years and is expected to increase further. Nevertheless, enthusiasm for science is often pushed into the background in everyday clinical practice, and the next career step is often dominated by male colleagues.
With the interdisciplinary mentoring program MentÄ@UK RUB, we would like to motivate young female doctors at the UK RUB to become involved in clinical research and teaching in addition to a sound clinical training. Through workshops and information evenings, the participants acquire valuable knowledge that they can put into practice in an interdisciplinary cooperation project.
The program creates the ideal conditions for the next step in their careers, the assumption of a university senior physician position. Supported by the Lore Agnes Program and the Faculty of Medicine, it represents a further offer of equal opportunities.
